Following the USA’s World Cup exit after a 3-1 loss to the Netherlands in the last 16, US national team goalkeeper Matt Turner told Fox Sports his team would “lose sleep” over their defensive performance. The USA hadn’t conceded a goal from open play at the tournament in their three prior games in Qatar and Turner explained:
“I think it wasn’t our best performance, it wasn’t the performance that we’ve been accustomed to, whether it be in this tournament or prior. We were allowing balls into the box and just not tracking runners. When you let good teams with world class players run freely onto a ball, it makes things pretty difficult. We didn’t block shots and it was just a tough night overall defensively, and one that we’ll probably lose some sleep over. There were some great moments but, from front to back, it wasn’t our best performance. I think that’s the disappointing part, because we all want to create moments for people back home to fall in love with the game and tonight wasn’t one of those nights, unfortunately.”
