MIAMI. - The United States fell 1-nil to reigning champions Spain as the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Colombia 2024 continued Sunday at Estadio Olimpico Pascual Guerrero in Cali.

The U.S. began its participation in Group B, which includes Morocco and Paraguay, on the second day of the group stage. The Stars and Stripes will look to reboot its challenge for a third title when it meets Morocco on Wednesday.

Olaya Enrique struck in the 8’ with a left-footed strike in the box to place the defending champions in front.

Claire Hutton attempted a strike from outside the box in the 33’ but was blocked by the Spanish backline.

Taylor Suarez had an attempt inside the box in the 45’+3 but was denied by Spain defender Silvia Lloris.

U.S. goalkeeper Teagan Wy made an important save in the 53’ to deny Jone Amezaga from close range.

Wy made another stop in the 69’ to deny Laia Martret on a drive through the left flank.

Elise Evans made two clearances in the 72’ to deflect consecutive chances from Spain.

Leah Klenke struck from outside the box in the 90’+3, but Eunate Astralaga captured the ball for the save to see out her clean sheet.

Costa Rica to take the field on Monday

Costa Rica will be the last Concacaf nation to begin its campaign when it faces the Netherlands in Group F on Monday at Estadio Olimpico Pascual Guerrero in Cali to close out the first round of matches in the group stage.

Mexico and Canada prepare to build on a point earned on Tuesday. Mexico will meet Australia in Group A, while Canada will take on Fiji in Group B.
