First-half goals from Roberto Firmino and Neymar eased Brazil past a young USA side at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Friday night.

Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino scored his eighth international goal with a simple volley in the 11th minute after superb work from Douglas Costa on the right wing.

The newly-named captain doubled his side’s lead from the penalty spot after Fabinho went over under minimal contact with Wil Trapp in the area.

Weston McKennie, who plays his club football with Schalke, was a bright spot for the Yanks in the first half but could not create quality chances for his teammates in the final third.

In the second half, manager Tite trotted out a number of players for their Brazil national team debuts; Barcelona’s midfielder Arthur Melo, Everton’s fiery forward Richarlison, Lucas Paquetá of Flamengo, and Éverton Soares of Grêmio all came on.

The visitors lived up to their mantle as the match wore on, connecting pass after pass and enjoying themselves on the field. Brazil ended the game with nearly twice as many competed passes as their opponents and 65% possession.

After a disappointing World Cup campaign in Russia, Neymar led Brazil to victory though Costa earned the most plaudits.

Both teams are in action again on Tuesday. Brazil faces El Salvador in Maryland while the USA prepares to play heated rivals Mexico in Tennessee.
