We will not be seeing Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez at a World Cup again.
The two highest goalscorers in Uruguay’s rich footballing history are now well into their 30s and may very well be retired when the 2026 tournament comes around.
Cavani and Suarez’s ‘Last Dance’ out in Qatar sadly didn’t go to plan, though.
Uruguay were expected to progress from Group H along with Portugal, but were eventually pipped to second spot by South Korea.
The South American nation beat Ghana 2-0 in their final match, however, South Korea’s 2-1 victory over Portugal saw them progress instead due to the fact they scored more goals.
Yeah, it was really was the finest of margins in Group H, with Cavani and Suarez’s World Cup tales brought to an end by Hwang-hee Chan’s late, late strike.
Suarez started the match against Ghana and assisted both of Uruguay’s goals, which were scored by Giorgian de Arrascaeta.
It was the Liverpool icon’s finest performance at the tournament by a considerable distance and he was replaced by Cavani in the 66th minute.
Cavani failed to impact proceedings in a similar manner, even when Uruguay were desperately chasing a third goal late on to try and secure progress to the knockout stage.
The former Manchester United striker was involved in one of the game’s major incidents, though.
In second half stoppage-time, Cavani appeared to be upended in the box, although VAR declared that the contact wasn’t enough to award a penalty to Uruguay.
A penalty? Not for us.
Cavani was predictably furious and the incident is perhaps the reason why Uruguay players went absolutely bezerk at the officials after the full-time whistle had been blown.
And Cavani’s rage certainly didn’t end with the fiery scenes seen on the pitch.
As the veteran striker walked down the tunnel after being booked by referee Daniel Siebert, he was spotted angrily pushing over the VAR monitor.
We reckon a fine may be coming Cavani’s way in due course…
Calm down, Edinson!
How do we know it’s Cavani in the footage above? Well, the hair is a bit of a giveaway and the person in question is wearing the captain’s armband, which Cavani was given by Suarez as they swapped places.
It’ll be a shock if Cavani isn’t punished by FIFA, but given the context of the situation in which the incident occured, we can only hope they let him off lightly.
After all, no one likes the VAR monitors anyway…
