At his press conference before Uruguay’s must-win final Group H game with Ghana, coach Diego Alonso explained that he has spoken to striker Edinson Cavani and defender José María Giménez after both players seemed to criticise the coach’s approach for the 2-0 loss to Portugal.

Speaking to the press after the game, Cavani, now 35, told reporters to “ask the coach” for the reasons behind Uruguay’s loss while Giménez of Atlético Madrid said: “We didn’t go out to win.”

Alonso, however, explained that both issues had been sorted, saying: “the players came to talk to me and the problem was settled. They gave me their explanations and told me what they meant by what they said and, for me, that is more than enough.”

Uruguay must beat Ghana to have any chance of making the last 16 in Qatar having failed to score so far after a 0-0 draw with South Korea and the loss to Portugal.
