As reported by Kicker, Union Berlin head coach Urs Fischer has faced the media to discuss the return to training and Germany’s disastrous World Cup campaign.

Union Berlin are once again exceeding everyone’s expectations and are still fighting near the top of the Bundesliga whilst juggling European football. Fischer and his colleagues have been applauded for their approach to games as well as their transfer strategy which involves selling big and spending less but more wisely than other top teams.

In his most recent press conference, the 56-year-old talked about Union, the World Cup and much more.

We have one or two sick players with us, not all players are back yet. The first week is an introductory week, then it goes on with the friendlies. We have to get used to the rhythm again. That’s our focus at the beginning.”

Fischer on Germany being knocked out at the group stages:

“It’s crazy if you analyze it correctly. Then it’s only about 20 minutes against Japan. You did a lot of things right and are still eliminated. 20 minutes are sometimes enough.”

The World Cup in general and from a Swiss point of view:

“I watched a few games. I was disappointed that the Swiss were eliminated because you’re rooting for them. But I think that was clear in the end. You have to accept that. There are No more small nations. You have to earn every point there. There were a few surprises. That’s good for football.”

About injured Union players:

“Kevin Behrens is doing well again. Andras Schäfer is in advanced training. We hope that he’ll be fully back as soon as possible. He has to make a step forward every day. Laurenz Dehl warmed up with the team, that should be increased slowly now.”

Despite a tough before the winter World Cup break, Union Berlin will kick off their Bundesliga campaign in the new year sitting in 5th position. Their first game is against Hoffenheim at home on January 21st. Three points could see them climb as high as second in the table.
