Huddersfield Town midfielder Duane Holmes is prepared to remain at the John Smith’s Stadium for the remainder of the season before departing on the expiration of his contract in the summer, according to Alan Nixon.

The 28-year-old has been a key player for the Terriers this season – but has only been able to record two goals and two assists in 24 league appearances with his side failing to do anywhere near as well as they did last season.

Currently fighting relegation, a move away may be tempting for Holmes who will also be keen to have some clarity on his future with his deal in West Yorkshire expiring at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

Danny Ward and Jon Russell find themselves in similar situations with the latter reportedly attracting interest from West Brom and Rotherham United, though it remains to be seen if the 22-year-old seals an exit this month.

According to Nixon, all three players are willing to see out their existing deals at the John Smith’s Stadium which could deal the Baggies and the Millers a blow in their potential quest to recruit Russell.

And similar applies to Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday, both of whom were previously linked with a move for Holmes.

The Verdict:

This won’t be too much of a blow for the Rams or Wednesday considering they both have strong sides already and may not need Holmes anymore as they look to secure promotion.

And from the player’s point of view, there’s no real need to take a step down at this stage considering the Terriers still have a great chance of securing survival, especially if they enjoy a successful winter transfer window.

If they do survive, he could easily remain in his current division by signing a new deal and he may also have other options on the table in the summer so there’s no rush for him to decide on his future at this point.

The 28-year-old just needs to focus on ensuring he’s performing as well as he possibly can to try and make sure he secures a decent move for himself regardless of what happens with his current side, though you would hope the midfielder would be able to keep them afloat.

He certainly has a decent amount of EFL experience under his belt and that should serve him well if he needs to find a new club in the summer.
