In a recent report, FC Inter News offered an update on the future of Chelsea centre-forward Romelu Lukaku. It has been mentioned that the Belgian forward is ‘pushing’ to part ways with the Blues and seal a return to Inter Milan during the summer transfer window.

Lukaku’s Unimpressive Form In English Football This Season

Lukaku had a difficult season at Stamford Bridge as he struggled to find consistency with his performances as the spearhead of Thomas Tuchel’s attack. The Belgian international has banged in 15 goals and grabbed two assists in 44 matches for the West London club this season on all fronts.

The 29-year-old has impressed at times but has struggled to be productive in the final third based on his average of 1.7 shots, 0.9 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has also been a bit sloppy with his link-up play up top, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 72.9% in league football (stats via whoscored).

Should Chelsea Cut Lukaku Loose This Summer?

Lukaku has got the pace and power to cause a lot of problems for the opposition centre-backs. He can use his strong 1.91m frame to dominate the aerial battle inside the opponent’s half and can be a decent finisher in the final third when he is playing with confidence on the field.

At 29, the Belgian powerhouse is currently going through the prime years of his playing career. However, there is no denying that he has struggled to give a good account of himself over the past ten months.

Lukaku’s return to Chelsea has been quite a disappointment so far. His off-the-field comments about his love for his former club, Inter Milan have not gone down well with the West London club‘s supporters as well.

Hence, it makes sense for Tuchel to cut Lukaku loose and use the money generated from his sale to bring in a suitable replacement in this off-season. If Inter do come in with an offer this summer, the Blues would be wise to move Lukaku on as they simply cannot afford to keep an unsettled player in their squad going into the new campaign.
