In a recent segment on Youtube, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano offered an update on Manchester United and their pursuit of Chelsea playmaker Mason Mount. Romano said,

“Yes – Manchester United want Mason Mount.

“Manchester United will be in contact after this important Saturday in the final but after they will be in contact with Chelsea for Mason Mount.

“Chelsea insists on asking for at least £80m for Mount. Manchester United do not want to spend that money on a midfielder. They really like him, but they believe that amount of money is too much for a player that is out of contract in the summer of 2024.”

Mount’s Unimpressive Season At Stamford Bridge

Mount has endured a tough campaign at Chelsea as he has struggled to be consistent for them on the attacking third of the pitch. The 24-year-old has banged in three goals and earned six assists in 35 matches for the Blues this season on all fronts.

The England international has caught the eye at times in the opponent’s half based on his average of 1.4 shots, 1.3 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has even been accurate with his ball distribution after making 80.1% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).

What Should Manchester United Boss Erik Ten Hag Do With Regards To Mount?

Mount excels at creating a yard of space for himself and can shoot the ball with venom and accuracy from long range. He has also got the eye to unlock the opposition defence with a killer pass in the final third.

The English sensation is a decent dribbler with the ball when he is playing well on the field. However, he has to find a way to improve his productivity going forward.

Mount has struggled to play with confidence for Chelsea in the 2022-23 Premier League campaign. Hence, Man United could be enticed to move in for him this summer in the hopes of getting the best out of the player next season.

We can expect Mount to enhance the quality of Erik ten Hag’s match-day squad at Old Trafford. He might also help the Red Devils challenge for some top honors over the next few years. Thus, ten Hag should focus on trying to lower Chelsea’s £80m asking price so that he can arrange a deal for Mount in this off-season.
