In a recent report, Bild (subscription required) provided an update on Chelsea’s pursuit of Bayer 04 Leverkusen playmaker Kai Havertz. The German news outlet has claimed that the Blues are willing to cough up €100m (£90m) for the German midfielder, but only if they can pay the fee in instalments. The same source has also mentioned that the West London giants could face stiff competition from Real Madrid in the race to sign Havertz, who wants to part ways with Leverkusen this summer.

Havertz’s Brilliant Form At The BayArena Last Season

The Aachen-born youngster enjoyed the best season of his young career in the Bundesliga as he produced several match-winning performances as the chief playmaker of the Leverkusen attack. He participated in 43 matches for Peter Bosz’s team in the previous campaign, finding the back of the net 17 times while providing nine assists across multiple competitions which showcases his excellent productivity in the attacking third.

Havertz has been in a rich vein of form for his current employers as evidenced by his average of 2.0 shots, 2.0 key passes and 1.9 dribbles per 90 minutes in the recently concluded Bundesliga season. He has hardly given away the ball when interchanging possession after completing 85.4% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).

The 21-year-old has made a real impact at the international stage, scoring one goal in seven senior appearances for Joachim Low’s German national team. If he can maintain his high standards next season, then he should have a decent shot of being selected in the Germany squad for next year’s UEFA European Championship finals following the competition’s postponement because of the COVID-19 crisis.

What Will The Bundesliga Prospect Add To Frank Lampard’s Side?

Havertz can use his pace and agility to complete some penetrative dribbles in the opposition half. He can pass the ball with ease and grace as he is a technically-gifted footballer. The German international has also got an intelligent football brain that allows him to get into some promising areas in and around the opposition penalty box. He can also pick out a decisive pass in the final third and has proven himself to be a capable finisher in front of goal.

Havertz will be a superb acquisition for the Blues as he will not only bring more goals and creativity to Stamford Bridge but also improve the overall quality of Frank Lampard’s starting XI. Furthermore, the Leverkusen whizkid will offer some serious competition for the likes of Christian Pulisic, Mason Mount, Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek at the English capital next season.

At 21, Havertz is only going to get better with each year as he has the ceiling to become a generational talent over the next decade. He would also serve as a perfect replacement for Pedro and Willian at Chelsea in the long-run.
