Rob Edwards is ready for a quick return to management following his sudden dismissal from the Watford last week, The Athletic revealed this morning.

The 39-year-old is something of a trailblazer in showing what can be achieved after one good season of management in League Two, making the move from Forest Green Rovers to the parachute payment-fuelled Hornets this summer, and the harsh sacking should not have dented his reputation.

Adam Leventhal‘s piece in The Athletic this morning stated: “The Athletic has been advised by a close friend of Edwards that he is reflecting on his brief time at Vicarage Road and already considering his next steps in the game, having led Forest Green Rovers to the League Two title only five months ago.

“Ready to approach and be approached, was the spirit of the message, after going through the settlement process with Watford.”

This will have come as good news to clubs like Middlesbrough, Cardiff City and potentially West Bromwich Albion in the coming weeks, with vacancies available for Edwards to explore.

He has a pre-existing relationship with Kieran Scott at Boro and that may well increase his chances of sealing a new role on Teesside.

Did Watford win, lose or draw the last time they played at Goodison Park?

Win Lose Draw

Edwards’ dismissal would have been a very disappointing one, especially due to the perceived security that he had in the role, through contradictory comments from board members when the appointment was made.

Therefore, it demonstrates his strength of character to be available for new opportunities so soon, and that he feels pro-active enough to pursue new jobs from his end.

Expectations have probably decreased significantly at Boro over the last couple of months, and for some supporters, from this position, finishing in the top half may even be considered a successful season and one that would build belief for the future.
