Slaven Bilic had turned down two offers from Championship clubs since leaving Chinese club Beijing Guoan earlier in the year, as per a report from The Athletic.

The 54-year-old, who was appointed as Watford manager on Monday afternoon, had rejected the opportunity to manage the club late on during the last campaign.

Watford’s hierarchy decided to part company with Rob Edwards early on Monday afternoon, moving swiftly to confirm the arrival of the former West Brom and West Ham boss.

Huddersfield Town were one of the clubs who had approached the Croat, whilst the report states that the other side were a club ‘with a manager still in situ’.

Luther Blissett: He made over 500 appearances for the club. True or False?

The Athletic’s report also proceeds to mention that an opportunity in Belgium also surfaced for Bilic before his appointment at the Hertfordshire club was confirmed.

The verdict

In isolation, Bilic is an excellent appointment and he is a manager who has thrived in both the Premier League and the second-tier during his managerial career thus far.

However, Watford fans will still be disappointed, and rightly so, that Edwards was not afforded more time to fully adapt to managing a top Championship outfit.

However, the decision has now been made and Watford fans will be eager to see what the Croat can bring to Vicarage Road and what tactical shifts are implemented.

It would be interesting to see who the other Championship club is that identified Bilic as a target and whether that club are on the brink of parting company with their current manager.
