Mansfield were initially linked with a January swoop for Freeman last month.

A report from The News revealed that the League Two side were interested in securing a reunion with the defender.

Freeman has previously featured for Mansfield in two separate loan spells and has also played for their boss Nigel Clough during his time at Derby County and Sheffield United.

Portsmouth opted to cut ties with Danny Cowley following their recent defeat to Charlton Athletic in League One and are now on the lookout for a replacement.

Currently 13th in the League One standings, Pompey will be hoping to achieve a relative amount of success between now and the end of the season under the guidance of a new head coach.

As for Mansfield, they are currently in contention for a play-off place in League Two.

Having suffered a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Barrow yesterday, the Stags will be determined to get back to winning ways on January 14th when they face Crewe Alexandra.

The Verdict

Mansfield will be hoping that Portsmouth’s search for a new head coach does not drag on as they may have to switch their attention to other targets if this turns out to be the case.

Freeman will unquestionably find it beneficial to seal a departure from Portsmouth this month as he has struggled for game-time this season.

The right-back has only made six appearances for Pompey in all competitions this season and is currently below Zak Swanson in the pecking order.

Having featured on 150 occasions in League One during his career to date, the 30-year-old will be confident in his ability to deliver the goods in a lower division for Mansfield if a deal is completed between now and the end of January.

As for Portsmouth, they may not necessarily miss Freeman’s presence if Swanson continues to make strides in terms of his development in the remainder of his loan spell at Fratton Park.
