Millwall winger Connor Mahoney stepped up his return from injury on Monday night as the 24-year-old played for the club’s under-23 side against Nottingham Forest yesterday, with the official website confirming the player played 45 minutes.

The former Blackburn Rovers man had been sidelined since November last year after picking up a quad injury in training and hasn’t featured for the first team since.

However it now appears that he could be nearing a long awaited comeback as he managed to come through a half against the Forest youth side yesterday evening at Meadow Lane.

A skillful and pacey winger, Mahoney has featured 11 times this term for Gary Rowett’s side and would be a welcome returnee as they look ahead to another season of Championship football after solidifying themselves in midtable.

Originally signing for the club back in July 2019 from Bournemouth, Mahoney currently has just one year remaining on his current deal with the South London outfit.

The Verdict

This will come as a boost to Millwall as Mahoney will add another option to proceedings in wide areas that Rowett can really take advantage of between now and the end of the campaign.

The likes of Mason Bennett and Jed Wallace could really do with a rest and the presence of Mahoney should help to facilitate some much needed rotation when needed.

Still aged just 24, the winger still has a lot to prove in a navy blue shirt and is yet to realise his true potential since coming through as a bright young prospect at Blackburn.

With only just over a year remaining on his current deal, Mahoney faces a race against time to prove to Rowett that he is worthy of fresh terms further down the line.
