Newcastle United have made a loan enquiry for Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge.
According to The Northern Echo, the Magpies are in search of a short-term solution in that area with the window set to close in under 48-hours.
The imminent departure of Jonjo Shelvey has brought the club into action, with a move for Conor Gallagher also being pursued.
However, the club have yet to make any formal contact with either player with Fulham and Brighton also linked with a move for Berge.
Talks are ongoing with the Bladess, but no breakthroughs have yet been made in their discussions for the 24-year old.
Paul Heckingbottom has made his preference for Berge to stay quite clear throughout the month, but it is understood that the Cottagers have stolen a march in the race for his signature.

Berge has been a critical part of the United team this season, helping the Championship side to a 13-point advantage over 3rd place Watford in the battle for automatic promotion.
But with the club under a transfer embargo, and struggling with financial difficulties, it remains to be seen whether Berge will remain at Bramall Lane beyond Tuesday night’s deadline.
The Verdict
Berge departing United now would be a huge blow to Heckingbottom.
The manager has made it abundantly clear that he has no interest in losing the midfielder so this would really undermine his position.
There are no suggestions that Berge is forcing a move or is unhappy at the club.
But a move to Fulham would be a clear step up given how well Marco Silva’s side are doing in the top flight at the moment.
