The 34th Africa Cup of Nations has got under way, but the trio of Eintracht players in action in Côte d’Ivoire are still waiting for their first win.
Three Eintracht players – Omar Marmoush, Ellyes Skhiri and Farès Chaibi – are currently away with their national teams. Chaibi was given the ‘Man of the Match’ trophy after Algeria’s 1-1 draw with Angola, but the 21-year-old was obviously unhappy with the fact that they had not picked up all three points in their opening Group D match. “We dominated the first half from start to finish but after the break, we needed to show a lot more intensity,” said Chaibi, who played the full 90 minutes.
Egypt, for whom Marmoush came on in the 66th minute, looked as if they were going to lose their first game against Mozambique until deep into injury time, when Mohamed Salah equalised from the penalty spot in the 97th minute to salvage a 2-2 draw.
Tunisia lost their Group E opener 1-0 to Namibia. Skhiri played the full game.
Matchday 2: Ghana, Burkina Faso and Mali
The Eagles will be back in action from Thursday onwards. Marmoush’s Egypt face Ghana, Algeria’s Chaibi are up against Burkina Faso, while Skhiri’s Tunisia take on Mali.
