The 19-year-old, who like last season’s loanee Levi Colwill, is also left-footed and is very highly rated by those in power at the Premier League club, has been on the fringes of things at first-team level in recent weeks.

A report from Football Insider earlier in the week suggested that Championship and League One clubs are currently keeping tabs on the teenage defender.

Sharing his thoughts on Humphreys and whether a loan move to Huddersfield would represent good business, Carlton Palmer told Football League World: “I just don’t see this one happening really.

“He’s a young player. He wants to play but they’ve got loads of centre-backs at Huddersfield. They’ve got an abundance of riches in the centre back area.

“So, I just don’t see how this one is going to happen because Chelsea are not going to let him go out if he’s not going to play and Humphreys needs to play. He’s very, very talented.

1. The capacity of the John Smith's Stadium is over 27,000

Real Fake

“Unless he gets assurances from Huddersfield that he’s going to play, I just don’t see this one is happening.”

The verdict

As Palmer alludes to, Huddersfield are well stocked at the back, and whilst Humphreys would represent a more athletic and more youthful defensive option, there would be no guarantee that game time would be regularly afforded to him.

Chelsea and Huddersfield would have developed a strong relationship last season after Colwill reached new heights at the John Smith’s Stadium, however, it is a completely different situation now.

Humphreys is an exciting talent who will be eager to gain as much experience as possible to bolster his first-team chances at Chelsea and there will likely be clubs out there who could provide him with more game time than Huddersfield would.
