Only those close to Cristiano Ronaldo – or desperate to become his friend, like Piers Morgan – think that Erik ten Hag has not handled the difficult situation with Cristiano Ronaldo well. I think it is telling that most of the squad are happy about it.

I mentioned on our recent podcast that I think there is harmony in the dressing room, Ronaldo aside, and everyone seems to be fighting for one another on the pitch.

Even at a time we were beating Tottenham 2-0 at Old Trafford, Ronaldo wanted to make the night about him – an unused substitute – by storming towards the Old Trafford tunnel on the 89th minute. It was an act of petulance, and he should know better as a 37-year-old professional.

Ronaldo was left out of the matchday squad to face Chelsea at the weekend, as well as being told to train alone ahead of today’s crucial meeting.

According to the Manchester Evening News, it seems everyone at United agreed that this was the right way to deal with Ronaldo and they were impressed by how Ten Hag dealt with it.

Ronaldo has been nothing more than a distraction at a time Ten Hag is trying to build for the future. It’s crucial that if he stays until the end of the season, he must lead by example and stop behaving like a man-child.

Otherwise he needs to leave.
