Manchester United will be looking to offload Mason Greenwood for good when he returns to the club upon the culmination of the 2023/2024 campaign.

The Red Devils opted against reintegrating the 22-year-old back into the squad last summer after leaks had suggested that there were plans in place for him to resume his role in the team. However, it was the strong resistance from fans that led to senior figures performing a U-turn on their initial decision and announcing that the player would continue his career away from Old Trafford.

At the time, Greenwood hadn’t played a minute of competitive football since he was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in January 2022 – charges that were subsequently dropped in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew their participation from the case and new material came to light.

He went on to complete a season-long loan move to Getafe on deadline day last September where, after regaining match fitness, he quickly became one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Greenwood has recorded 10 goals and six assists in all competitions since reviving his playing career, and while the Spanish outfit are desperate to keep hold of him beyond the current term, it’s highly unlikely that they’ll be able to fork out the funds to acquire him on a permanent transfer.

Reds set Greenwood asking price

United value their academy graduate at £40 million, with Football Insider reporting that the board are ‘privately adamant’ they will cut ties with Greenwood when the window opens amid ‘significant interest’ from ‘top clubs across Europe’.

His contract is currently set to expire in 2025, although United have the option of activating a one-year extension until 2026, which they may opt to do in order to ensure they can pocket the maximum fee possible from his sale.
