Gathering for Christmas carols at football stadiums is now a German tradition but it all started with Union Berlin.

In 2003, a group of disgruntled fans from the second-tier club broke into their stadium in the woods, Stadion An der Alten Försterei, and held their own concert.

Since then, Union have turned it into an official annual event.

This year, almost 30,000 people packed into the stadium to share their festive joy.

They held candles, played music and sang Christmas carols under red-tinted light.

It all makes for a very impressive sight and Union fans will be hoping that this is the year that finally brings Bundesliga promotion.

Union currently lie in 6th place in the 2. Bundesliga.
