‘Unfortunately’: Van Nistelrooy confirms 57-touch hero v PAOK will need to be ‘assessed’ before Leicester | OneFootball

There was only one factor that could dampen Manchester United fans’ night after Thursday’s win over PAOK: a fresh injury setback.

As fate would have it, that’s what they’re now facing heading into Ruud van Nistelrooy’s final game as interim manager.

Amad Diallo was awarded a rare start for the midweek tie and essentially single-handedly gave the Reds their first win in Europe for over a year, with his two goals being the icing on the cake of yet another stellar showing for the Ivorian this season.

A looping back-post header from the unlikely aerial threat, followed by a resilient run and long-range finish, were the only goals on the night at Old Trafford. Amad undoubtedly put a strong case forward for his starting role under Ruben Amorim, who was surely watching on from Portugal.

Such a tremendous shift wouldn’t have gone unnoticed by Van Nistelrooy, either. He’ll currently be considering his squad for the weekend’s return to Premier League action at home to the Foxes, after which we – albeit reluctantly -welcome another international break – although it does mean Amorim is able to get to work behind the scenes and have some time with the players before travelling to Ipswich Town on November 24.

Nonetheless, Amad should’ve been a shoo-in to make the XI on Sunday but now faces an anxious wait to determine his condition and whether he’ll be able to feature at all.

Van Nistelrooy revealed to reporters post-match that the 22-year-old was withdrawn in the 81st minute because of an injury concern, meaning he must now undergo tests to determine the severity of his condition.

“He had to come off, unfortunately,” the Dutchman said, as cited by Samuel Luckhurst. “He’s being assessed now, and I hope he will be available for Sunday, but we have to wait and see.”
