Swansea City winger Josh Ginnelly has only featured eight times for the club since his arrival from Hearts during the summer of 2023, due to suffering a ruptured achilles that left him sidelined for most of last season.

Upon signing the wideman, then Swans boss Michael Duff would have held high hopes that Ginnelly could succeed in the Championship, after he notched 12 goals and four assists during the 2022/23 Scottish Premiership season.

Meanwhile, current Swans head coach Luke Williams admitted that the 27-year-old "looked excellent" before he suffered further injury setbacks which have kept him out of action.

Swansea City urged to give Josh Ginnelly another chance when he's ready to return

Football League World asked our Swansea fan pundit, James Fleming, if it was time for the South Wales outfit to let Ginnelly try and kick on with his career elsewhere in January, or if he still had something to offer his current club.

"I think Josh Ginnelly's situation is an interesting one to look at," James told FLW.

"I think it's unfair to write him off already considering he looked really good in the minutes he did get before his long-term injury that ruled him out for the rest of last season.

"But at the same time, obviously he has a history of not much luck with injuries, and it's not something you want to keep paying someone if they're never going to be fit.

"We saw it with Liam Walsh.

"He was a great player for us when he did get on the pitch, showed what he was worth.

"But we let him go, because his injuries were just too much to handle.

"For a club in the Championship you can't afford to keep paying people who just can't stay on the pitch.

"So, I think we should still give him a chance, and see how it goes after his injury.

"But if he does pick up another injury, or is struggling with multiple ones throughout the season when he does get back into the team, I think it could potentially be time to let him move on, and try something new outside of Swansea."

Swansea should wait until the summer before making Ginnelly transfer call

As recalled by James, Ginnelly did impress for the Swans before suffering his major injury during a clash with Sheffield Wednesday in September 2023.

During his eight appearances for Swansea, he notched two goals, with one coming in the Championship and one in the EFL Cup, as the winger looked to continue the positive form he had established at Hearts.

After he signed a three-year-deal back in 2023, Ginnelly's contract does not expire until June 2026, so the Swans should be in no rush to cash in on him just yet.

With this in mind, Williams and co should not rush into selling the wideman in January, and should assess the situation during the summer transfer window instead.
