Tuesday marks the chance for Aston Villa to prove that the club is capable of true greatness. Overcoming adversity and getting the needed result against a good side when down would be the ultimate, naturally. After how the first leg went in Paris, the match at Villa Park is about much more.
In Parc des Princes, AVFC was outclassed. Now, back in England, Unai Emery's squad needs to show the ability to do more than attempt to hang on. The Spaniard believed it was the best way for him to advance in the Champions League. Second-guessing that now would be silly.
The fact remains that because of how that match played out, there is something for Villa to prove. Opening up and showing the quality that has been assembled has to leave something of an impression today. Against a good PSG side, even if the result doesn't earn going into extra time or winning on aggregate, it will illustrate that this corps can compete with one of the best teams in Europe, which is paramount.
Since losing 3-1 in France, Emery has spoken about the CL fixtures being at halftime. This has been used to show that achieving the desired goal of advancing is still realistic and possible. Entering the pitch and bringing the needed fight that would warrant earning the right to then play in the semis is all that is asked of the Villans on Tuesday.
In a way, they are free to play carefree with something of a reckless abandon. Sitting back and playing for a draw brings nothing. While a lot is (deservedly) made of the PSG attack, Villa have plenty of good options in that regard as well.
Between Youri Tielemans and Marco Asensio picking out blade-perfect passes, or Marcus Rashford and Morgan Rogers creating havoc on the opposing defenders, the second leg needs to be a statement that this Aston Villa bunch can cause just as many problems as the top sides in Europe.
