Speaking at a media round table (via @iMiaSanMia), Bayern honorary president Uli Hoeneß has given his thoughts on Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz.

When asked about what he thinks of the Bundesliga Player of the Season, Hoeneß said: “Everyone knows that I would love to see him at Bayern”

Hoeneß then expanded on his thoughts of Wirtz and German national team teammate, Jamal Musiala: “But I think the hype surrounding them is wrong. Under these pressures, they cannot develop as they should. I think it’s madness to compare Jamal with Maradona. This does young players no favours. There’s no doubt that they can get to that level. But I think it’s a huge mistake to put them under so much pressure now.” Luckily, Germany’s performances at EURO 2024 showed that Musiala and Wirtz are capable of playing together, it was previously thought that the pair may get In each other’s way on the pitch.

In recent weeks the speculation surrounding Wirtz and Bayern has ramped up. Several outlets have reported that the Leverkusen attacker is a target for Bayern next summer and others have said Bayern aim to partner Musiala, Wirtz and Xavi Simons at Bayern together next year.

However, Wirtz will stay at Leverkusen at least for another year, his father said at the beginning of EURO 2024, while Bayern may not have it their own way with trying to sign Wirtz as Real Madrid is also said to be interested in the 21-year-old, especially if current Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso also moves to the Bernabeu next summer.
