Former Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has heaped praise on the leadership skills of Hansi Flick following the club’s magnificent treble last season.
Flick was appointed as interim head coach in November following the sacking of Niko Kovač, and did an incredible job of steadying the ship before landing the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal and Champions League.
Speaking to German gastro podcast Tisch für drei, Hoeness attributed Flick’s success to the team spirit he was able to develop.
“The boys get along, there is a unit there,” Hoeness said.
“The win is the result of a fantastic co-operation with the coaching team and the team.
“A community spirit has emerged here. Nobody takes one step less to help the others. That is the great art.”
Bayern’s season was in disarray earlier in the campaign, and a 5-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt was the final straw for the board when deciding to dismiss Kovač.
Hoeness believes Flick was able to root out the selfishness that had spread through the squad.
“He managed to develop a community spirit and the egoism that is always there in a great football team, he screwed down a lot,” the 68-year-old former Bayern attacker said.
“He made a team out of 20 individualists.”
Bayern rewarded Flick in April when they agreed a permanent three-year contract with the 55-year-old.
