Speaking to reporters following Ukraine’s 1-1 draw with France in the opening 2022 World Cup qualifying match, manager Andrey Shevchenko confirmed that he had initiated a plan specifically designed to counter Kylian Mbappé.
“We studied our opponent and our friendly match last year that gave us informations that playing an open game was a bit suicidal. With players like Mbappé, who is a very good striker in space and completely changes sides… we put more players there to close that flank. One to put pressure on him, the other to close the space. This plan worked and the congratulations go to the players.”
