Due to geographical restrictions, there were two fixtures from the Europa League last 16 on Wednesday evening.
This is what went down.
Scorers: Fekir 30′; Kostić 14′, Kamada 32′
Eintracht Frankfurt take a narrow lead back to Germany following a 2-1 win over Real Betis in a captivating affair in Seville.
Fresh from their fantastic 4-1 win at Hertha BSC on Saturday, Frankfurt started this one in similar form in front of goal by taking an early lead when Filip Kostić floated a delightful cross-come-shot over the head of Claudio Bravo and into the far corner of the net.
But Betis’ main man Nabil Fekir levelled on the half-hour mark when he cut onto his left foot and curled an unstoppable low effort around Kevin Trapp and into the corner, although that parity lasted little over a minute.
A swift break down the right set Jesper Lindstrøm free and he unselfishly cut back for Daichi Kamada to roll into an empty net.
The Dane was again involved in winning a penalty at the start of the second half but Rafael Santos Borré’s effort from the spot was weak and saved easily as the Eagles were forced to settle for a single goal advantage against one of the tournament favourites.
Scorer: Paquetá 59′
A lone second half strike from Lucas Paquetá fired Lyon to victory in a rainy Porto from a contest that somehow only ended up with one goal in it.
Both sides had some big early opportunities in the early exchanges but were foiled by a combination of poor finishing and good goalkeeping in an exciting opening half.
It took an hour for the opener to arrive and came via Paquetá, who scored from close range after being teed up by Moussa Dembélé.
The hero almost turned villain shortly afterwards when a penalty was given against him for handball, only for a VAR check to overturn that decision and technology again rescued Lyon five minutes into injury-time when it ruled out a dramatic Chancel Mbemba volley for offside.
