Watched by a 30,000 crowd at St Mary’s Stadium, Lauren Wade forced an early save from Mary Earps, while England had a penalty decision overturned for an earlier handball of their own.

Jackie Burns had to push away a Millie Bright strike, before Ellen White’s effort slipped inches wide.

Rebecca Holloway blocked Georgia Stanway’s goal-bound shot but soon after Fran Kirby found the net from the edge of the box, to make the breakthrough.

Beth Mead doubled the lead before half-time through a crowded box and crossed for the first of Alessia Russo’s  early second half brace.

The scoring was completed when the unfortunate Kelsie Burrows deflected another Mead cross over her own keeper.

England next play on Wednesday in the quarter-finals against either Spain or Denmark, 8pm at Brighton.

Austria took second place in the group with victory over Norway, in front of well over 12,000 at Brighton.

Nicole Billa got the only goal of the game eight minutes before the break, heading in a Verena Hanshaw delivery.

That lead could have been extended in the second half but Barbara Dunst and Billa both shot straight at Guro Pettersen.

Norway needed a win to go through but the bar thwarted Celin Ildhusoy, while Ada Hegerberg was denied by Manuela Zinsberger.
