Qualifying for women’s international tournaments is to undergo a huge revamp with Uefa introducing a Nations League from 2023.

Like in the men’s Nations League format, teams will be sorted into different groups and different leagues.

Teams can be promoted and relegated from the Leagues and there will be a final stage for the four group winners from League A, with semi-finals and a final to determine the winner of the Nations League.

“For 2024, the two finalists will join France as Europe’s three Women’s Olympic Football Tournament representatives (along with the third-placed team if France reach the final,” Uefa explain.

And there are changes to qualification for Euro 2025 as well.

Euros qualifiers will take place in the same format as the Nations League, with League positioning after qualifiers now used to determine:

  • Who qualifies directly for Euro 2025
  • Who will enter the play-offs
  • Which leagues team will start in for the next Nations League campaign

The top eight teams in League A will enter Euro 2025 directly, as will the host nation. The remaining League A teams will enter the play-off rounds alongside the top three teams from each League B group and the five winners plus the three best runners-up from Group C.

Ultimately, seven teams will end up reaching Euro 2025 through the qualifiers.
