Uefa has confirmed it will refund Liverpool fans who held tickets for the 2022 Champions League final in Paris.
Last May’s showpiece with Real Madrid in Paris was overshadowed by chaotic scenes as supporters of Jürgen Klopp’s side faced hours-long queues at turnstiles and a investigation was subsequently carried out on how the final was policed.
European football’s governing body falsely blamed a delayed kick-off time at the Stade de France, pushed back by 36 minutes, on “the late arrival of fans” — a claim later disproved by an independent report.
Following those findings, Uefa announced that it will reimburse the Anfield club’s 19,618 allocation in the French capital in a move expected to cost several million.
“We have taken into account a huge number of views expressed both publicly and privately and we believe we have devised a scheme that is comprehensive and fair,” read a Uefa statement, as per the Daily Mail.
“We value the input from the Liverpool FC supporter organisations Spirit of Shankly (SoS) and Liverpool Disabled Supporters Association (LDSA) as well as the open and transparent dialogue throughout this period.
“We recognise the negative experiences of those supporters on the day and with this scheme we will refund fans who had bought tickets and who were the most affected by the difficulties in accessing the stadium.”
News of the refund is still unlikely to dampen fans’ anger at Uefa over events in Paris. Several demonstrations against the governing body took place during last month’s Champions League last 16 tie with Real Madrid.
