UEFA open to taking Chelsea vs Manchester City Champions League final to Wembley

A report by SunSport claims that UEFA are ready to take the Chelsea vs Manchester City Champions League final to Wembley in England but only on certain conditions.

For that to happen, the UK government would have to give a set of guarantees to UEFA. Boris Johnson made a personal plea to UEFA president, Aleksandr Ceferin, when Turkey was added to the Government’s red list.

Istanbul is, of course, the location of the Champions League final between City and Chelsea and UEFA understands that asking fans to travel to Turkey amid their recent wave of Covid-19 is not totally sensible. (h/t SunSport)

However, grounds of Tottenham, Newcastle, Arsenal and Aston Villa have been ruled out by UEFA and Euro bosses eye Wembley, with a temporary capacity of 22,500, as the perfect location for rescheduling the final. (h/t SunSport)

Can Chelsea win it in London?

There are a series of issues that must be overcome for that to happen. The first of it is the Championship play-off final which is scheduled to played at Wembley on the same date.

The report goes on to add that UEFA will also seek guarantees from the UK government that “all media, broadcasters, sponsors and VIPs will be allowed to attend without quarantine issues”.

Clubs who have participated in this season’s UCL have also been asked to give up a part of the prize money to the Turkish government to cover the £20m costs incurred in order to host the event at the Ataturk.
