Earlier in the summer, Aymeric Laporte had emerged as one of Real Madrid’s top defensive targets as the club attempted to shore up their numbers in the backline.

Formerly of Manchester City, Laporte is currently plying his trade for Al Nassr – a club he joined in 2023.

However, many believe the Spaniard still has the quality to play at the highest level of football, especially having helped his nation secure the European championship in the summer.

Real Madrid, to that end, were considering a move for Laporte, in an attempt to add more depth in the defensive unit. However, a move did not materialise.

Laporte denies Real Madrid interest

In a recent media interaction, Laporte was asked about the Real Madrid interest in the summer and what made him not to join Los Blancos.

Laporte, however, was quick to deny the fact that Real Madrid never actually officially approached him or his club, Al Nassr.

“Real Madrid interest? There was nothing, no talks,” said Laporte (h/t MARCA), who is currently on international duty with the Spanish national team.

The former Man City defender formed Spain’s central defensive pairing alongside Robin Le Normand in their UEFA Nations League encounter against Serbia.

Time for Real Madrid to sign Laporte?

One can be forgiven for expecting Real Madrid to go after Laporte in January, especially on the back of the club’s recent injury scares in defence.

During the international break so far, the Spanish giants have already lost Eder Militao with a minor injury while Antonio Rudiger reportedly has a rare condition that might limit his game-time.

David Alaba, meanwhile, is still nursing from an injury, thus leaving Carlo Ancelotti devoid of options in the defensive unit.

Real Madrid, therefore, could go after a new centre-back in the January transfer window, with Laporte likely to emerge as a candidate.
