UEFA have confirmed Aston Villa keeper Emiliano Martínez will be suspended for his side’s Europa Conference League semi-final first leg against Olympiacos.

The decision comes after a peculiar night in Lille for the Argentine keeper, who was both the hero and the villain of the penalty shoot-out.

Either side of saving Nabil Bentaleb and Benjamin André’s spot kicks, Martínez was shown a yellow card for apparently antagonising the home fans.

At first, it seemed as if he would then be shown a red card as it was his second yellow (the first came for time wasting in the 39th minute) but the little known IFAB law 10, which states yellow cards across regular and extra-time do not carry over to penalty kicks, came into play.

The two bookings did make it three for the 31-year-old in the competition though (he was also booked in the first leg), meaning he will serve a one-game ban and miss the first leg at Villa Park on May 2.
