Manchester City hosted German club RB Leipzig at the Etihad Stadium on the opening Matchday of the 20211/22 UEFA Champions League season. Man City came out 6-3 winners in a game that had almost everything. Christopher Nkunku scored a hattrick for the visitors, while City had five different goal scorers, Nathan Ake, Mahrez, Grealish, Cancelo and substitute Jesus, with one own goal. It was an entertaining and positive start for Pep Guardiola’s side in this years UCL campaign.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City lined up in a 4-3-3 formation, with Ferran Torres playing up top as the false nine. Jack Grealish attacked from the left and Riyad Mahrez from the right. The midfield three included Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri and Bernardo Silva. The back four included left-back Zinchenko, centre backs Nathan Ake and Ruben Dias, and right-back Joao Cancelo. Ederson started in goal for the Citizens. The average positions of the City players showed that they were in much more forward and attacking positions, and created a lot of goal scoring opportunities in the match.Jessie Marsch lined up the Leipzig side in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Peter Gulasci in goal. He was behind a back four including left-back Angelino, centre backs Will Orban and Klostermann and right back Mukiele. Tyler Adams and Konrad Laimer were the defensive midfielders behind three attacking mids, Emil Forsberg, Dani Olmo and Christopher Nkunku. Andre Silva led the line upfront for them.

The average positions of the Leipzig players show that they kept their shape, and defended well alongside attacking frequently enough to get three goals.

Man City had a decent xG of 2.30 in the match, taking a total of 15 shots in the game with seven on target. They scored six goals in the game. RB Leipzig have an xG of 0.55 in the game, with nine shots on goal, three on target and three goals. Manchester City had more possession in the match and created more attacking chances.Riyad Mahrez had the highest xG in the match with 0.89 followed by substitute Gabriel Jesus 0.56. Jack Grealish took four shots in the game, while Leipzig attacker Nkunku scored with all three of his shots in the game. Tyler Adams had the most passes alongside Cancelo with nine each.

Man City took most of their shots from inside the box after a series of crisp passing movements. They scored all their goals from either inside the box or from the edge of the box. They had a high xG because of the large number of shots from close range.

RB Leipzig’s shot map shows that they took most of their shots from inside the box, with one or two from outside. Nkunku scored from three shots and got his hattrick.

The xT timeline shows that the home team had a higher threat through most of the first half and towards the ending moments of the game. The xG timeline shows that City had a higher xT throughout the game as compared to Leipzig.

The pass matrix of the home team showed that they had a lot of the possession and made a lot of passes in the match. Ake had the most received passes for City with 58 followed by 48 for Cancelo.

The pass matrix of the visitors showed that they did not have a lot of the possession and therefore, a lesser number of passes. Klostermann had the most received passes with 51.

The passing zones of Man City show that they had a lot of passes in the defensive areas and midfield. De Bruyne had the most passes into the opposition box for the Citizens.

RB Leipzig did not have a lot of passes in the game, with most of them being in midfield. Olmo had three passes into the opposition box for the visitors. They also put in a decent number of crosses into the box.

The xT creation zones of Man City show that they created a lot of threat in and around the opposition penalty area. Cancelo had the highest xT creation from his passing.Other than Cancelo, De Bruyne and Mahrez also had decent xT creation from their passing. Sterling, Mahrez and De Bruyne had good xT creation from dribbling as well.

The xT creation zones of the visitors show that they did not create enough threat upfront. Tyler Adams had the highest xT from passing for his team.

Other than Tyler Adams, Angelino and Mukiele also had high xT from passing. Adams and Laimer had the highest xT from dribbles.

There were a few defensive duels for Man City in midfield and in defence. Fernandinho won the most duels for the Citizens with three.

In terms of aerial duels, there were a few in defence and a few upfront in attack. Nathan Ake won four aerial duels for them.

There were a few loose ball recoveries to make for Man City players in midfield and attack. Nathan Ake made four recoveries for them.

There were a large number of defensive duels for RB Leipzig in defensive positions and a few in midfield. They had all players win a few defensive duels. Orban winning two for them was the highest.

The aerial duels the visitors had to face were on the right side of midfield and defence. Mukiele won five aerial duels for Leipzig which was the highest in the match.

There were only a few loose ball recoveries made by the RB Leipzig players, with Angelino and Tyler Adams both making two recoveries each for the visitors.

It was a good result for the Citizens in this year’s Champions League campaign with three points, but Leipzig will be happy with their attacking performance and look to do better in the remaining group stage games.
