Two-time European champions Juventus made a visit to Swedish side Malmö in UEFA Champions League Group H clash. The visitors started their new champions league campaign brightly after first-half goals from Alex Sandro, Paolo Dybala and Alvaro Morata ensured their win. Juventus now sit at the top of Group H, level on points with Chelsea.

The home side lined up in a defensive 5-3-2 formation. Goalkeeper Diawara was protected by a three-man defence comprised of Brorsson, Nielsen and Ahmedhodzic. The two wide men in the defence were Soren and Jo Inge. The midfield trio consisted of Bleg, Christiansen and Rakip. Colak and Birmancevic led the attack upfront.

The average position shows that the three defenders occupied deep spaces in their own half. The wide men pushed up high in the wings towards the centre. Their positions indicate that they were able to track back if required. The two men up front played in conjunction with the midfielders.

Massimilano Allegri’s side lineup with a back four, 4-4-2 formation. Bonucci and De Ligt were the two central defenders flanked by Alex Sandro and Danilo in fullback positions. Rodrigo Bentancur and new signing Manuel Locatelli occupied the midfield positions, with Rabiot and Cuadrado in the wide areas of the midfield. Alvaro Morata led the attack with support from Paolo Dybala. Szczesny was the man.

Juventus occupied a lot of positions in the opposition half. The fullbacks pushed up high to support the attack. The midfielders similarly pressed on high to link up with the attacking players.

Juventus came out on top in the xG battle with an xG of 3.01 to Malmo’s 0.38. The visitors also took more than twice the number of shots as their opponents. The home side had more interceptions and clearances since they were pushed up in their own half. Juventus made 30 recoveries in the opponent half. They also dominated the possession, barring the last 15 minutes of the match.

Juventus forwards Alvaro Morata and Paulo Dybala dominated the xG charts with an xG of 1.05 and 0.96, respectively. They similarly dominated the shots chart. Manuel Locatelli made a total of 11 passes into the final third while making eight recoveries in the opponent half. Juventus defender De Ligt and Malmo defender Nielson won three aerial duels each.

The home side took a total of seven shots, with three of those shots from inside the opposition box and four from outside the box.

Juventus’ shot map shows that they took the majority of their shots from inside the opposition box. All of their goals were scored from inside the box, including a penalty.

The xT timeline in the first half was dominated by the visitors, all of their goals were scored in the first half as well. The second half timeline was even for the most part, with Malmo threatening more in the closing stages of the game. The xG timeline, however is completely dominated by Juventus with Malmo having little to show for.

Ahmedhodzic both attempted and received the highest number of passes for his team, 69 and 47, respectively. Defenders Ahmedhodzic and Nielson played 17 passes between them.

Danilo flourished in passing, partnering with both Cuadrado and Bonucci. He attempted an impressive 106 passes and received 83.

Malmö’s passing zones display that they played most of their passes in the central zones. They attempted most of their successful passes into the opposition box from the right-wing. They also made two smart passes into the opposition box.

Juventus dominated the passing in the right-wing near the centre and also in the other areas near the centre. They played crosses from both left and right-wing into the opposition box, achieving more success from the right-wing.

Malmö’s xT creation zone shows that they created their highest xT from the right-wing and from the left-wing near the opposition box. Ahmedhodzic created the highest xT from passes, 0.388.

Jo Berget created the highest xT from his dribbles, 0.039. Christiansen made many unsuccessful passes with brought down his xT from passes.

Juventus created the highest xT from multiple areas near the opposition box. Leonardo Bonucci had the highest xT from his passes, 0.44.

Cuadrado’s xT from passes was brought down because of the unsuccessful passes that he played. Alex Sandro created the highest xT from his dribbles, 0.067.

Malmö won most of their defensive duels in their own half near the left-wing, while they lost a lot of them on the right-wing. Nielson engaged in eleven defensive duels, winning two of them.

Malmö lost many aerial duels in their own half. Colak participated in six aerial duels winning two of them.

The home side was poor in recovering loose balls in many areas of the pitch. Colak lost six of his eight loose ball duels.

Juventus engaged in defensive duels all over the field, winning quite a few in their own half and some near the opposition box. Adrien Rabiot participated in nine defensive duels for his team, winning three of them.

De Ligt won three of the five aerial duels that he participated in. Juventus won most of their aerial duels on the left-wing near the centre and some near the opposition box.

Juventus recovered the majority of their loose balls in their own half. They were also successful in recovering many loose balls in the opponent half. Paulo Dybala won three of the seven loose ball duels that he was involved in, while Alex Sandro won three out of six.

Alvaro Morata was impressive for his team. He was directly involved in two goals for his team, winning a penalty and scoring another goal from open play. The stats indicate that Juventus were equally impressive in nullifying any threats from the home side.
