Paris Saint Germain and Club Brugge played out a 1-1 draw last night in their UEFA Champions League 2021-22 opener.

Club Brugge took the pitch with a 4-4-1-1 formation with Charles De upfront and goalscorer Hans Vanaken behind him as the shadow striker.

PSG started the match with a 4-3-3 formation with the trio of Neymar, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe up top.

PSG dominated the majority of the possession but Club Brugge had more shots attempted (14) with an xG of 1.39. PSG managed only eight shots in the game and had a low xG of 0.76 and were the more defensively active team among the two.

Brugge had most of their shots inside and around the edge of the box. They scored their only goal from inside the box and took a few shots from distances which did not trouble the keeper.
PSG took almost all of their shots inside the box scoring the only goal from there.
After PSG scored within the 15 minutes of the game, Club Brugge dominated the majority the game scoring the equaliser. PSG did try to take control of the game at the end but failed to score any more goals.
Brugge just saw 37% of the ball with Kamal Sowah attempting the most passes(50) while Noa Lang received the most with 38.
PSG had 63% of ball possession during the game. Goalscorer Ander Herrera played the most number of passes (96) while also receiving the most (83).
Club Brugge played most of their passes in the right-wing. They played four successful smart passes. They mainly used the right-wing to play in crosses with Noa Lang delivering the most with 6.
PSG played most of their passes near the left side of midfield playing four successful smart passes. Achraf Hakimi delivered the most crosses (4) from right back.
Brugge had the highest xT zones near the edge of the penalty box on the right side of the field. Stanley Nsoki was the best passer in the team with an accuracy of 94.29%
Charles De had the highest xT from passes (0.49) while Noa Lang had the highest xT from dribbles (0.269)
PSG had the highest xT creation zones near the right wing. Julian Draxler had the highest passing accuracy of 97.44%
Lionel Messi had the highest passing xT of 0.51 but had hid xT from dribbles reduced due to unsuccessful attempts. Neymar had the most xT from dribbles with 0.108
Brugge lost a lot of their defensive duels. Eder Fabian won five duels but lost out on eight occasions.
They were much stronger in the air winning the majority of their aerial duels. Vanaken won three and lost three of his duels.
It was a mediocre performance from Brugge in terms of loose balls. Kamal Sowah lost four of his five duels.
PSG lost the majority of their defensive duels. Paredes, Draxler and Danilo all lost two duels each while Messi lost five.
PSG were extremely poor in the air losing nearly 65% of their duels. Marquinhos won all of his duels.
They were comparatively better in loose ball recoveries. Diallo and Wijnaldum were impressive .
PSG might be disappointed after the performance they put last night after coming into the tie as favourites. However, Club Brugge will be really pleased with their dominating performance against a side like PSG and would walk into the next matches with a lot more confidence.
