Uefa have confirmed they will probe Barcelona’s involvement in the Negreira case.

The Catalan giants have been accused of making payments to former LaLiga match official Enriquez Negreira over a 17-year period when he was vice-president of the referees’ committee.

In addition to Barça facing legal proceedings in Spain, European football’s governing body confirmed on Thursday that it will also explore whether the club’s arrangement with Negreira has broken any of its own regulations.

“In accordance with Article 31(4) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations, UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspectors have today been appointed to conduct an investigation regarding a potential violation of UEFA’s legal framework by FC Barcelona in connection with the so-called ‘Caso Negreira’,” read a UEFA statement.

“Further information regarding this matter will be made available in due course.”

Barça president Joan Laporta has robustly denied all the claims made against the club, who sit 12 points clear at LaLiga’s summit.
