Liverpool travelled to Spain to face Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in the third group game of the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League. The Reds left it late to secure a 3-2 victory against Diego Simeone’s men as Salah opened the scoring for the visitors before Naby Keita added another. Atletico drew level through two first-half goals from Griezmann. Salah converted a penalty in the 78th minute to provide Klopp’s side with the advantage at the final whistle.

Atletico Madrid had a slightly better xG than their opponents. Liverpool took a few more shots than their opponents but they were equal in terms of shots on target. Liverpool pressed more effectively as indicated by their lower PPDA value. They also made 22 recoveries in the opponent half. The visitors were also on top in terms of possession.
Griezmann had the highest xG in the match followed by Salah. Both Carrasco and Lemar led the dribbles chart making an equal number of dribbles. Alexander-Arnold made twenty passes into the final third.
The home side took a total of eight shots with six shots on target. Most of their shots were taken from inside the opposition box including the goals.
Liverpool took a total of ten shots with five shots on target. Two of their goals were scored from outside the opposition box while another one was from the spot.

Atletico Madrid were successful in winning the defensive duels on the left-wing in their own half. Hermoso won three of his nine defensive duels.
Hermoso won three of his six aerial duels. The home side were successful in winning the aerial duels in the half-spaces near the centre.
Atletico recovered most of their loose balls on the left-wing and few in their own half. Trippier won four of his seven loose ball duels.
Liverpool won most of their defensive duels on the right-wing. Matip won two of his five defensive duels.
Matip won four of his six aerial duels. Liverpool were dominant in the air in the half-space near the centre.
Liverpool recovered most of their loose balls successfully in the wide areas near the centre. Firmino won four of his seven loose ball duels.
Mo Salah has continued his sensational form in the Champions League as well after being talked about as one of the best players in the world. Liverpool are now placed firmly at the top of Group B with Atletico Madrid following behind on second with four points.
