U23s to kick off Matchday 22 against Freiburg
Borussia Dortmund
The Borussia Dortmund U23s kicked off the 2022 calendar year by securing a 3-1 away win in the closing stages of an entertaining encounter with Waldhof Mannheim on Monday. Coach Enrico Maassen's charges will be back in action on Friday night looking to make it a perfect start to the second half of the campaign with a second win in as many matches. The SC Freiburg reserves will be the visitors to Stadion Rote Erde. Kick-off is at 19:00 CET.
BVB have lost only one of their last six league matches and are gradually establishing themselves in the upper third of the table. A win against SC Freiburg would see the Black & Yellows climb up to fourth place for one night at least.
The visitors from Breisgau have picked up 26 points from 21 games this term and currently occupy 12th place in the 3. Liga table. Last weekend, Freiburg suffered a narrow 3-2 loss to leaders Magdeburg. Mika Baur, who is only 17 years old, particularly stood out on his third-tier debut. SC generally tend to have a very young team, with 22-year-old Claudio Kammerknecht the oldest player in Freiburg's starting XI against Magdeburg. With an average age of 20.5 years, their team that faced the table-toppers last weekend was the youngest to start any third-tier match this season.
The reverse fixture in August also took place on a Friday evening. A crowd of over 5,000 spectators at Dreisamstadion saw BVB claim a stunning 5-2 win. Abdoulaye Kamara made his 3. Liga debut that day, becoming the youngest player of all time to appear in the third tier. The Black & Yellows will be without the suspended Richmond Tachie and Ted Tattermusch as well as the injured Marco Pasalic and Luca Unbehaun.
