Leeds United Under-21s exited the Premier League International Cup after defeat to a strong PSV Under-21s on Thursday evening.

The Dutch side arrived at the LNER Community Stadium as the current holders of the competition and were in fine form, comfortably winning and progressing into the knock-out stages where they will aim to hold onto their title.

The visitors got off to a perfect start, taking the lead after just four minutes on the rain-soaked turf in York. Harry Christy initially saved well from Mo Nassoh, before the PSV captain collected the ball again and fired home at the second attempt.

PSV doubled their lead in the 26th minute, in fortunate circumstances. A hugely deflected cross from the right-hand-side landed perfectly at the back post for Tim van den Heuvel, who had the easy job of heading home at close range.

Leeds did have a couple of chances of their own. Both fell to Joe Snowdon who looked to cause problems down the left wing. He forced a save from Niek Schiks, before moments later curling an effort narrowly wide.

However, two became three with just over half an hour played at the LNER Community Stadium. A clever team move began with Jevon Simons, who played in Emir Bars, who then squared across the box for Tai Abed to fire home at close range.

In what had been a tough first half for the Whites, the away side made it four on the stroke of half-time. Again the ball fell kindly at the back of the box from a cross and in space, Muhlis Dagasan was up from full-back to fire home

HALF TIME: Leeds United Under-21s 0-4 PSV Under-21s

Both teams made a change at the break. For PSV, Dantaye Gilbert came on for Richard Ledezma, whilst Leeds replaced Harvey Sutcliffe with Max McFadden for the second 45 minutes.

After a strong first half, the Dutch side continued to threaten and that meant a fifth goal quickly arrived. In the same fashion as in the first half, it was a back-post cross which caused the problems, with Fredrik Oppegard on hand to turn home this time.

Despite being behind by a large margin, the Whites did keep pushing and trying to play their way. Set-play opportunities came, but the away side stood firm again to clear.

PSV scored twice more, with two penalties. Simons stepped up to take the first one and calmly slotted home left-footed, into the bottom corner, before Dantaye Gilbert was next to fire home from the spot and make it seven.

The full-time whistle brought the game to a close and Leeds had finished in Group A with two wins and two defeats from their four matches, against some strong European development opposition.

This result meant that the Whites exited the Premier League International Cup at the hands of the competition holders, with the Dutch side now progressing into the knock-out stages.
