Scorers: Mota 6′, 31′, Ramos 68′, Jota 109′, ; Pobega 45′, Scamacca 60′, Cutrone 89′

A new star was born for Portugal as Dany Mota inspired them to an epic extra-time win over Italy in Ljubjana.

Portugal took the lead early through a sublime overhead kick from Mota after the ball hovered invitingly for him in the area.

And the man who plays his club football in Italy with Monza added a second shortly after the half-hour mark before Tommaso Pobega pulled one back from close range after poor Portuguese defending from a corner.

Gonçalo Ramos added a third, which looked to have put the game beyond doubt only for Gianluca Scamacca and Patrick Cutrone to team up for a surprise comeback to send a thriller to extra-time.

Matteo Lovato picked up Italy’s sixth red card of the tournament shortly after the restart and it proved costly as Jota and Francisco Conceição got the goals to win a thriller for Portugal.

They will now take on neighbours Spain in the semi-final.

Denmark 2-2 Germany *Germany win 5-6 on pens

Scorers: Faghir 69′ Nelsson 108′; Nmecha 88′, Burkardt 100′

It took a dramatic penalty shootout to separate the sides in Székesfehérvár as Germany set up a meeting with the Netherlands in the final four.

After a scoreless first half, substitute Wahidullah Faghir, still just 17, came on in the closing stages to score for his first goal at U21 level.

But Lukas Nmecha levelled with two minutes remaining to save Germany’s skin and send the contest to an additional period – the third game of the day to do so.

There was still no separating them there as despite Jonathan Burkardt blasting his side ahead, a Victor Nelsson penalty ensured more of those would follow in a shootout.

On penalties, Germany kept their nerve in sudden death to triumph 6-5.

Spain 2-1 Croatia

Scorers: Puado 68′, 110′; Ivanušec pen 90+4′

Holders Spain needed a double from substitute Javier Puado to see off Croatia after extra-time as they remain in with a chance of defending their title.

Puado, of Espanyol, looked to have won it for them moments after coming on, only for a Croatian penalty with the final kick to send it to extra-time.

But in the additional 30 minutes, Puado struck again to win it with a brilliant finish under pressure.

They will now face Portugal at the same venue in Maribor.

Netherlands 2-1 France

Scorers: Boadu 51′, 90+3; Upamecano 23′

The Netherlands stunned France with a rather against-the-run-of-play comeback win.

Bayern Munich-bound Dayot Upamecano put France ahead midway through the first half with a header, only for the quick reactions of Myron Boadu to even things up shortly after the break.

Jonathan Ikoné then hit the woodwork as Les Bleus aimed to regain their lead before Boadu struck again in the 93rd minute to shock France on the break and give his side the victory.

They will face Germany in the semi-final.

The semi-final fixtures take place on Thursday, with the final to follow on Sunday
