Uruguay lost in the final in 1997 and 2013 but had little difficulty keeping an underwhelming Italy team at bay on this occasion.

Their success was built on a solid defensive unit, which kept clean sheets in six of their seven games at the tournament.

The only time their backline was breached was when England scored three past them in the second group game.

The Young Lions crashed out of the tournament in the last-16, with Cesare Casadei netting a controversial late penalty to send Italy through.

England were heavily touted before the U20 World Cup started and cruised through the group stage by taking seven points from a possible nine.

They fell behind early against Italy, but Alfie Devine levelled the game midway through the first half.

England thought they had a penalty when Carney Chukwuemeka went down, but nothing was given following a VAR check.

Controversy then struck at the other end as a powerful long-distance effort from Casadei hit Jarell Quansah on the arm.

The defender did not move towards the ball, but referee Ramon Abatti awarded the penalty after checking the pitchside monitor.

The 2-1 defeat was a massive disappointment for Ian Foster’s side, who were second favourites behind Brazil heading into the tournament.

Brazil also flattered to deceive, progressing to the quarter-finals before Israel sent them packing.

Israel were narrowly beaten by Uruguay in the semi-finals but gained compensation by beating South Korea to claim third place.
