As full debuts go, Manchester United left-back Tyrell Malacia had one to remember against Liverpool on Monday evening.
The 23-year-old Dutch international was Erik ten Hag’s first signing at Old Trafford this summer, after completing a £14.7m switch from Ajax in early July.
Restricted to substitute appearances as United suffered back-to-back defeats in their opening two games of the season, Malacia was handed his first start by Ten Hag against the Reds – and he certainly made the most of the opportunity.
Goals from Jadon Sacho and Marcus Rashford were enough to secure the victory for the home side, despite Mo Salah’s reply for Liverpool late on.
United’s backline was outstanding from start to finish, too, with Lisandro Martinez being voted Man of the Match for his superb performance in the heart of defence.
Mirroring the effort of his former Ajax colleague, Malacia has also received plenty of praise for the way he successfully kept tabs on Salah throughout the match, rarely allowing the Egyptian superstar to make much progress towards goal.
On the rare occasion he did let the opposition get the better of him, Malacia showed tremendous desire to win the ball back. In total, he completed eight tackles, won six duel and completed 93% of his attempted passes on a night where the United new boy surely made the left-back role his own.
Fans of the 13-time Premier League champions were undoubtedly impressed by Malacia’s assured showing, sending his highlights viral in the hours following the final whistle. You can check them out below.
United supporters on reddit were quick to compliment Malacia on his performance, pointing out that it marked a major shift in quality for the team defensively.
“Outstanding tonight. Proper Utd attitude and work rate,” declared a first supporter.
A second read: “Maguire and Shaw must be s***ing themselves – and rightfully so.
“Should start every game now,” agreed another.
“Salah couldn’t breathe,” wrote a third fan, impressed by Malacia’s desire to keep the Liverpool star quiet.
“He slid for a block against Trent then got up to sprint to knock it out for a throw instead of a corner. Heart and hustle,” gushed a further response.
“Bless him, he’s crouching so the Liverpool players have a better chance of falling out of his pocket,” joked a final user.
For all the criticism United have received at the start of the new Premier League season, Ten Hag’s men currently sit one point ahead of Liverpool in the table – and have the chance to extend that gap ever further when they visit Southampton on Saturday lunchtime.
Based on Monday night’s evidence, Malacia has surely bagged himself a second United start down on the South Coast.
