Both a Qatar-based group and UK businessman Sir Jim Ratcliffe submitted world record takeover offers for Manchester United ahead of Wednesday night’s deadline.

That occurred at 9pm UK time as current owners the Glazer family explores the possibility of selling the club.

Multiple UK news media sources report that Sheikh Jassim ‘remains confident’ that his debt-free world record offer is the best proposal on the table but does face stiff competition from Ratcliffe’s INEOS group.

The Daily Mail and Guardian state that the offers from both are believed to be in the £5 billion range, with each party believing that they are the only two who are interested in a full takeover rather than purchasing a partial stake in the Red Devils.

Those stories also warn that the bids may be enough to entice the Glazer family to sell and that there “remains some distance” between those bids and what they are seeking, reported to be closer to £6 billion.

However, there have been crossed wires regarding the bids, with United claiming that they have not been received, although both the Jassim and Ratcliffe groups insist they were tabled on time.

An extension is set to be offered until Friday for bids to be officially tabled.
