Matteo Moretto confirms that two Serie A sides were interested in striking a deal with Lille striker Jonathan David over the summer, but Inter and Juventus are beginning to plan their proposals for January.

Four European clubs were interested in purchasing David over the summer, including Napoli and Roma, as well as Aston Villa of the Premier League and LaLiga giants Atletico Madrid, but none of them were able to strike a deal with both the player’s agents and his club.

According to what Moretto wrote in his Caught Offside Daily Briefing column, David’s entourage were already asking for significant wages and bonuses, which might have been part of the reason why an agreement was not struck.

Roma instead landed Artem Dovbyk in a high-profile deal with Girona, while Napoli went with Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea.

Inter and Juventus planning to wait for David

The Canada international will be out of contract at the end of the 2024-25 season and is expected to leave Lille by the summer. He has scored just shy of one goal every two games during his time in France, registering 72 Ligue 1 goals from 148 league appearances (87 from 189 in all competitions).

As he is expected to leave before the end of June, David will be free to negotiate with any team he chooses from January onwards.

Moretto suggests that David has been admired by Juventus’s Cristiano Giuntoli for some time, and it is also a similar situation with Inter’s Piero Ausilio, although it remains to be seen whether either make a formal approach later on in the season.
