Benfica have found themselves under the cosh in bizarre circumstances to kick off their Champions League campaign.
The Portuguese giants saw their Group D counterparts, RB Salzburg, awarded a penalty in the opening three minutes when Anatoliy Trubin clattered into a Salzburg player. But the hosts’ blushes were spared when Karim Konaté blasted his penalty attempt over the bar.
While Benfica’s early issues seemed to be in the rearview mirror, the match took another turn when centre-back António Silva appeared to deliberately punch the ball off the line while attempting a goal-line clearance.
Once again, Salzburg was given a penalty and the Benfica defender was shown a straight red card. This time however, the visitors took advantage of the major blunder, as Roko Šimić stepped up and fired Salzburg into the lead from the spot.
Can’t imagine a worse start to the night for Benfica! The Estádio da Luz faithful will be fuming.
