Florian Plettenberg reports that Thomas Müller’s transfer to America’s MLS will be finalized soon. Plettenberg claims that Müller will sign with one of two MLS clubs currently in the running. One – as has been reported previously – is Los Angeles FC.
The second club is not specifically named, but it might be the case that FC Cincinnati – which holds the uniquely American “discovery rights” to Müller – could be the one. The American system enables a club to claim exclusive negotiating rights to a player set to transfer to the league.
Müller’s fellow German footballing legend Marco Reus, who eventually moved to LA Galaxy last summer, was initially claimed by Charlotte FC as part of the “discovery rights” system. Reus ultimately moved to his current Angelino club in late August of 2024.
There should be no real problems preventing Müller from moving to the club of his choice. Whatever happens, the Bayern Munich mainstay will represent just the second club of his long and storied professional career.
