Entering the FIFA Club World Cup represented the beginning of a new era at Manchester City. With new players and new coaches, there was a sense of optimism that surrounded Pep Guardiola’s side entering the tournament. After Manchester City’s three group G games, there have been a host of positives for City to take out of the competition. Rodri’s return to the pitch has been one. The integration of new signings into the City squad has been another.
The obvious improvement from Savinho and Jeremy Doku is another positive to emerge from Manchester City’s FIFA Club World Cup campaign. Both players look to have added the end product they lacked at key times during the 24/25 season. If what they’ve displayed in the United States holds both players loom as key players for Manchester City next season.
Looking at the two starts Jeremy Doku has made against Wydad AC and Juventus he has shown another side to his game. The Belgian international has scored two goals in his two starts. His goal against Wydad AC came at the backpost with a tidy finish from a Phil Foden corner. Doku’s goal against Juventus came after a superb piece of interplay between him and Rayan Ait-Nouri.
The major criticism of Jeremy Doku’s play at Manchester City has been his end product. Whether that’s his delivery into the box or his finishing. But so far at the Club World Cup, his finishing and ability to get into dangerous positions look to have improved. The question marks that surround his delivery into the box remain, but so far there looks to have been a major improvement in Doku’s game. If the Belgian international can become a consistent scorer and add that to his immense dribbling ability he could become a major weapon for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Brazilian international Savinho is in a similar position to that of Jeremy Doku. Savinho had a promising debut season at Manchester City. In a struggling City side, there were glimpses throughout last season of Savinho’s prodigious talent. But where he fell down was with his finishing. Too often, he squandered chances during the 24/25 season, but he is young enough to quickly improve that area of his game.
Watching Savinho play at the Club World Cup it appeared that the Brazilian winger needed a goal for his confidence. He’d been getting into good positions and his dribbling ability, delivery and link up play in possession from the right wing were a prominent feature of his play so far at the Club World Cup. All that was lacking was a goal. That goal came when Savinho struck a wonder strike against Juventus in the second half and it was exactly what the Brazilian international needed for his confidence. Looking ahead, it could become the moment that unleashes the shackles from Savinho, depending on how the 25/26 season pans out for the young winger.
The form and progress of Savinho and Jeremy Doku as players have stood out at the Club World Cup. The hope is that the competition can kickstart their City careers and see them both become key players for Pep Guardiola’s side next season.
