Manchester City could yet see two integral members of their first-team operation under Pep Guardiola sold to Turkish football this summer, a new report has claimed.
After a relatively quiet start to the month, transfer activity around the Etihad Stadium is expected to accelerate, with several senior players facing uncertain futures under Pep Guardiola ahead of the new season.
Ederson and Ilkay Gündoğan are among the most notable names in that bracket, with the former attracting interest from multiple clubs — including failed talks with Napoli — and the latter having only just signed a 12-month extension to a one-year deal he penned after re-joining City from Barcelona last summer.
While Ederson’s future has long been speculated upon — particularly amid Saudi Arabian interest — the growing noise around Galatasaray suggests a new direction for the Brazilian shot-stopper is firmly on the cards.
Manchester City, for their part, are preparing for all eventualities, having already explored replacements in FC Porto’s Diogo Costa and even held interest in Juventus’ Michele Di Gregorio before he turned down a move – that according to Italian media.
Gündoğan’s situation, meanwhile, is more complex, remaining a valued figure internally but the arrivals of Nico González and Tijjani Reijnders having raised legitimate questions about his role in the midfield hierarchy.
Now, according to new comments issued by Turkish journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu, as translated by Sport Witness, Ederson is now keen on a move to Super Lig giants Galatasaray, who may in turn be met by reasonable demands from Manchester City over a transfer fee.
“Okan Buruk (Galatasaray manager) wants a goalkeeper with good feet from the beginning. Ederson is one of the best players in that description. The player rejected Napoli. He wants to come to Galatasaray,” Sabuncuoğlu claims.
He continued, “His asking salary is less than €10 million. The figure Manchester City wants is not high. If Galatasaray sign Ederson, Manchester City are ready to let him go.”
There was also further details concerning the future of Manchester City’s veteran midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, who himself has been linked heavily with a move to Turkey despite seeing his Etihad Stadium contract extended by 12 months this summer until the end of next season.
“Ilkay Gündoğan is ready for the squad, he wants to come to Galatasaray,” Sabuncuoğlu insisted. He continued, “Galatasaray haven’t been able to make a comeback yet because they are trying to get [Victor] Osimhen done first and then the goalkeeper.”
A potential double deal involving Ederson and Gündoğan would mark one of Galatasaray’s most ambitious transfer windows in recent memory — and would leave City with key decisions to make on squad structure.
Ederson has been Pep Guardiola’s first-choice goalkeeper since 2017 and has won six Premier League titles during that time. However, there has been a repeated indication that the club is open to offers, particularly with just one year left on his contract.
As for Gündoğan, his departure would bring a sense of finality to an era. The German midfielder was Pep Guardiola’s first signing and played a crucial role in multiple title-winning seasons.
That said, a summer move — even after his recent contract renewal — would not come as a major surprise, especially with Galatasaray reportedly confident of his desire to return to Turkish football, the country of his heritage.
Whether or not Galatasaray can financially structure deals for both remains to be seen, while Manchester City are not expected to stand in the way should acceptable bids arrive – an approach taken on many players who have been open to new challenges in the past.
