Two Liverpool defenders step up rehabilitation from long-term injuries | OneFootball

Liverpool defenders Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez continued their rehabilitation from long-term injuries at the AXA Training Centre this week.

The official club site posted some pictures that should be hugely encouraging to Reds fans as we look forward to next season. Van Dijk and Gomez can be seen doing some light running and work with the ball in those photographs.

The scars of the surgeries Gomez has undergone can be seen. The 23-year-old defender has suffered a fractured leg, a cruciate ligament injury, two ankle surgeries, and, most recently, this patella tendon injury. Gomez faces a huge year ahead of him as the world waits to see if he can return to his best after another significant setback.

Van Dijk has been out of action since Jordan Pickford’s challenge on Liverpool’s number 4 ended his season in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park last October. The ruptured cruciate ligament is the worst injury Van Dijk has had to contend with in his career – the previous being an ankle issue that kept him out for almost five months while at Southampton in 2017.

As the LFC site says, there is still no timeline placed on a possible return for either Gomez or Van Dijk.

With the Netherlands hoping to have Van Dijk at this summer’s European Championship, Jürgen Klopp will be keeping a very close eye on his situation.
